she agreed to do this biopic because she wants to know her as a person. Vidya Balan says she doesn’t pay heed to people’s opinion about her as it affects her.
Vidya Balan had been offered as many as 10 biopics in the last three years. This year, she finally okayed two of them. One being ‘Ekk Albela’, where she makes a special appearance as Geeta Bali. And there’s the Kamala Das biopic.
Vidya Balan will be seen as Kamala Das in an upcoming biopic. Kamala Das was a poet, author and columnist who wrote extensively about female sexuality.
There’s something about the film which touched Vidya Balan. “There have been a lot of great stories narrated to me in terms of the biopics that I have been offered over the years. Some I liked, but they could not happen, some I did not like. With the Kamala Das biopic, everything fell in the right place at the right time. She is strong, level-headed and a feminist. Plus, she is a poet. So, it was a yes from the word go.”
Vidya Balan said, “Kamala Das was very progressive, she was very strong. I loved the script (of the film) the minute I read it. I agreed to do this biopic because I want to know her as a person. She is a very unique person and I just want to know her better.”
The challenge for the actress is to sound like Kamala Das without mimicking her. A voice coach is being brought on board to ensure Vidya Balan gets the nuances right. “Voice casting” is on at this very moment whereby a linguistic specialist will teach Vidya Balan to speak like Kamala Das.
There were talks that the Kamala Das biopic might be made in two languages, Malayalam and Hindi, but now, we hear that’s not the plan. Vidya Balan confirms, “It is not a bilingual film. It will be a Malayalam film. We start shooting once I finish ‘Begum Jaan’ which rolls from June 18.” Vidya explains, “It will release all over India, but with Hindi subtitles.”
