A man allegedly killed his wife by pushing her into the Ganga canal on the pretext of clicking a selfie on 31 May. The couple Ayesha and Aftab were married for two years and have an eight-month old son. The incident happened on Monday in Meerut Sardhana area. The accused, Aftab used selfie as an alibi to take his wife Ayesha close to the Ganga canal and pushed her into it.

After the act, Aftab give wrong information to police, reached Sardhana police station with his eight-month-old son and complained that five miscreants tried to rob them and pushed Ayesha into the canal when she resisted, he said.

Rajesh Verma, station officer, Sardhana police station, said, “An FIR has been filed in this regard by Naeem – Ayesha’s brother. He has said that the couple had a troubled relationship as Aftab, 30, often demanded more dowry which they were unable to pay.”

“When we started interrogating him, he got confused while answering questions and eventually admitted to his crime. He used selfie as an alibi to take her so close to the canal,” said Verma.

Police then recovered the body from the canal and initiated investigation. On finding loop holes in the version given by Aftab, police took him into custody and interrogated sternly. Aftab confessed to the crime and said he pushed his wife into the canal while clicking selfie. The couple had married one and a half years ago. A case of dowry killing has been registered against Aftab and his elder brother Shehzad.
