Australia batsman Usman Khawaja is set to join Rising Pune Supergiants as replacement for an injured Kevin Pietersen in IPL 9. Kevin Pietersen has been ruled out of the ongoing Indian Premier League tournament due to calf injury. Usman Khawaja was expected to be one of the best buys in the IPL 2016 Player Auction, but none of the franchises showed any interest in the in-form left-hander.

Now the Australia opener batsman Usman Khawaja is being reported as the top priority for the replacement by the struggling Rising Pune Supergiants, who have won just one game so far. On being asked whether Usman Khawaja will be added to the Rising Pune Supergiants side as a replacement for Kevin Pietersen.

The Rising Pune Supergiants coach Stephen Fleming said, “He is a guy we are surely looking at. There is a shortlist we are working through so looking at availability and visas and the like, but he is certainly a guy we are interested in.”

Usman Khawaja was in imperious form for the Sydney Thunder in their won KFC Big Bash League season last summer. Opening the batting, the left-hander posted scores of 109*, 62, 104* and 70 in his four matches to average an incredible 172.5 for the tournament. His stunning run in all formats of the game forced his selection in Australia’s World T20 squad.
