During the test match between India and England on the fourth day of the match, umpire Paul Reiffel met with an unusual accident on Thursday at Wankhede Stadium. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was fielding at the boundary while throwing the ball it hit the umpire’s head and he fell on the ground. He was later attended by an English physio and doctor rushed to the injured umpire and took him to the pavilion for the medical aid.
The incident took place after the post lunch session and later Paul was taken to the hospital for treatment and scans. Paul Reiffel, a former Australia fast bowler, was positioned a the square-leg and Kumar threw the ball towards Cheteshwar Pujara but it did not go till Pujara and hit the umpire.
The 50-year-old, Paul Reiffel is replaced by Marais Erasmus who was the third umpire but has to come on the field after the incident. Later, reserve umpire took the position of the third umpire.
Thursday is the first day of the test match and it is yet to be to seen if Paul can return to the field, that can be only known after the reports of the scans can come out as more four more days are yet there for the match to be played. India had won the second and third Test to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the five-match series.
