Usha Khanna passed away in Mumbai Saturday morning. Usha Khanna died at the age of 89. Usha Khanna is survived by her three children, Malavika Sangghvi, Devieka Bhojwani and Siddharth Khanna.
Usha Khanna was an Indian music director in Hindi cinema. She was the third female music director in the Indian film industry. After Jaddan Bai and Saraswati Devi one of the most commercially successful in male dominated industry.
Filmmaker Shyam Benegal recalls Usha Khanna as an “enterprising lady”, who was very much the presiding spirit of the cafe. Shyam Benegal recalls, “She was there everyday and all the regulars would eventually come to know her. She was a wonderful, warm person and a very good host.”
Usha Khanna was married to award winning documentary filmmaker Rajbans Khanna and was the niece of Balraj and Bhisham Sahni. While she was a well known figure in Mumbai’s social and cultural scene.
Usha Khanna is remembered as the founder of Cafe Samovar, one of the most beloved landmarks in the city’s cultural memory. The secretary of the Jahangir Art Gallery, Usha had set up the cafe in a corridor adjacent to the main exhibition hall in 1964.
