India’s biggest defense project, Scorpene submarine which is designed by French defense contractor DCNS is India’s biggest step toward Marine defense. Recently, 20,000 documents with the intimate details of the submarine’s secret design were leaked online as reported by The Australian. The leaked documents were marked as “Restricted Scorpene India” and it had all the secret capabilities exposed of the six submarine’s that DCNS has designed for the Indian Navy.
Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar told the media that he has asked the Navy Chief to dig up all the details on the documents and the Indian Navy issued a statement suggesting that the ‘available information’ was being examined by Ministry of Defense experts.
INS Kalvari, Scorpene submarines are being built at the Mazgaon Docks Limited in Mumbai and will be the first of six Scorpene class submarines being constructed in India. Total costing of these Scorpene submarine are around 3.5 billion dollar. These submarines are considered to be the most silent underwater submarines that they are extremely difficult for the enemy to detect it.
The company that is contracted for building the submarines DCNS, France has already build submarines with almost similar concept for Malaysia, Chile and is also building Scorpene submarines for Australia.
Scorpene submarine data leak is from overseas and not from India.
Although apart from India Chile and Malaysia operate Scorpene class submarines and Brazil is going to induct..the leaked document was labeled Indian Scorpene submarine programme. All the critical information has been leaked, including acoustic noise levels, sensor details, weapons suite. It will be very easy for enemy submarines to exactly align their tracking and sensing modules as per Scorpene classification.
