Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis were knocked out of the French Open in the third round by the pair of Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova on Sunday. The top seeds were looking to win all four Grand Slam women’s doubles titles, but suffered a shock 6-3, 6-2 loss to Czech pair Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova in the third round. Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza were gunning for a non-calendar Slam after winning the women’s doubles title at Wimbledon, US Open and the Australian Open. But the top seeds appeared all at sea on a gloomy day at Roland Garros and their bid to complete the ‘Santina Slam’ ended after the Czechs blasted a service return winner to break Hingis in the final game.
Sania Mirza said, “We played bad and they played good. It’s as simple as that, You have to come up with your ‘A’ game. … We obviously didn’t play anywhere close to our best.”
Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis failed to realise their hopes of winning four Grand Slam titles on the trot. They had won Wimbledon and US Open doubles titles in 2015 and the Australian Open in 2016, the season’s first Grand Slam in January.
Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis were rusty from the start and could not hold their serve five times in the match, including four in the second set. Giving away a breakpoint in the opener, they lost the first set 3-6. The start of the second was no different as they failed to hold their first two serves to trail 0-4. The top seeds however fought back at that stage and broke their opponents to finally get on the board in the second at 4-1. However, they then conceded their own serve in the next game and the scoreline read 5-1.
Mirza and Hingis were irked by a call that went against them and Mirza threw the ball in frustration at the decision. But the pair failed yet again and lost the set 6-2 to end the dreams of a Career slam so early into the event. Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza made a shock exit from the women’s doubles competition while compatriots Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna entered the men’s doubles quarter-finals along with their respective partners in the French Open in Paris on Sunday.
Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis lost to Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova 3-6 2-6 in a third round match.
