India Badminton Champion Saina Nehwal has entered the semifinals of the Asia Badminton Championships. Saina Nehwal beat third seed Wang Shixian 21-16, 21-19 in the quarterfinals of the Badminton Asia Championships in Wuhan, China on Friday.
The World No. 8 Saina Nehwal , who had registered semifinal finishes in the Swiss Grand Prix Gold, India Super Series and Malaysia Super Series Premier Open before skipping the Singapore Open, will take on the winner of the match between Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara and China’s Wang Yihan. Saina Nehwal, who had lost the last two meetings with Wang, tried to be patient during the energy-sapping rallies but many times she failed to control the shuttle and lost points by hitting wide and long.
The second game was an even closer affair. After an evenly matched start, the Chinese player raced to a 15-9 lead as the match looked to be heading to a decider. But Saina Nehwal fought her way back to tie the score at 16 each. After trading a few blows and going back and forth for the next few points, Saina Nehwal had a match point at 20-19 and she duly took the opportunity with both hands to seal her place in the semifinals.
