Indian former captain Ravi Shastri is displeased with the filmmaker of Azhar, the biopic loosely inspired by life of former captain Mohammed Azharuddin. Though the film, in which actor Emran Hashmi plays the character of Azhar, Gautam Gulati has represent the character of his then teammate Ravi Shastri. Ravi Shastri was also popular amongst girls during his regime and the Tony D’Souza-directed biopic seem to have stretched this fact to a limit which the veteran Indian cricketer has found it objectionable.

In Azhar, Ravi Shastri is played by Gautam Gulati. The character of Ravi, a senior player and handsome hunk in the Indian dressing room, is shown as a womaniser. The character of Ravi in the movie is shown cheating on his wife during a foreign tour. While the film doesn’t address any of Azharuddin’s teammates by their full names only the first names are used the film leaves little to imagination in the fact that the first names of the cricketers are kept intact. So inside the Indian Cricket Team dressing room, apart from Azhar we have a certain Ravi, Navjot, Manoj, Kapil.

According to reports, Ravi Shastri has complained to the cricket authorities over this issue and is not at all happy. However the makers have put a disclaimer at the start of the film mentioning that the movie is not a biopic on former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin. Actor Gautam Gulati who plays the alleged role of Ravi Shastri in the film has been quoted  saying that the role may be inspired by Ravi Shastri in looks and appearance but its not Ravi Shastri in real. But Ravi Shastri seems to have taken it seriously, previously former bollywood actress and ex wife of Azharuddin was upset with Azhar over her portrayal in the film.

Azhar is a movie based on the life of the Hyderabadi batsman, who was implicated in a cricket match-fixing scandal in 2000, and banned by BCCI for life.
