Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that a task force will be set up in the next few days to prepare a comprehensive action plan for “effective participation” of Indian sportspersons in the next three Olympic Games – 2020, 2024 and 2028. PM Narendra Modi made the announcement at a Cabinet meeting on Friday, and said the task force would be set up in the next few days.
PM Narendra Modi has also asked the Sports Ministry for a detailed report on why India’s performance was disappointing at the Rio Games and asked them to submit the same by the end of September.
The Task Force will prepare the overall strategy for sports facilities, training, selection procedure and other related matters.
The announcement comes after India won only two medals at the recently-concluded 2016 Summer Olympics at Rio. Wrestler Sakshi Malik clinched a bronze while badminton player PV Sindhu won a silver medal. The next Olympic games will be held in Tokyo.
