Nirbhaya gangrape case convict Vinay Sharma tried to commit suicide on Wednesday night in Delhi’s Tihar jail. Vinay Sharma, one of the five adult men convicted for their role in the horrific December 2012 gangrape case, He first took excessive painkillers and thereafter tried to hang himself with a towel in Tihar jail. He was caught in the act by a Tamil Nadu special police personnel on duty who stopped him and has now been admitted to hospital.
According to a News18 report, Last year, Sharma had demanded extra security after he was allegedly beaten up and abused by inmates in the jail. He is not the first convict in the case to have attempted suicide. Ram Singh, was found hanging in his cell in Tihar in March 2013. Jail authorities had said he had committed suicide, but his family had then alleged that he had been murdered.

On December 16, 2012, The 23-year-old woman had been gang-raped by six people in a moving bus and thrown out of the vehicle on the night. She had, later, died at a hospital in Singapore. Another convict, who was a juvenile when he had committed the crime, had been sentenced to three years in a reformation home on Aug. 31, 2013. He was released last December.
