Early life of Dr. Verghese Kurien

Verghese Kurien was born in Calicut to a Syrian Christian family. Being a bright student he chose to pursue a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering in U.S. in the year 1949. After returning from U.S. he started working for an experimental creamery, a Government of India’s initiative in Gujarat. Kurien carried most of his experiments in Anand, a place in Gujarat’s Kaira district. During that time Anand was the place where Polson, a dairy company operated by a Parsi business man, Pestonjee Edulji was operating in full swing. A clever and shrewd businessman that he was, Pestonjee manipulated even the Government officials to become the king of the dairy industry and started monopolizing the market. He used to sell at higher prices and even exploited the farmers.

When Verghese Kurien became aware about this upsetting state of monopolised milk production he was immensely moved and it was then that the seeds of movement were sown. Kurien promised himself to bring a change not only in the miserable state of farmers but he also decided that he would not leave any stone unturned to make India the largest producer of dairy in the world. He started working for the empowerment of farmers and it was in 1970 that he finally launched Operation Flood; a social reformation that made India meets its dairy requirement adequately.
