A powerful explosion was heard in central Paris on Friday after midday, according to reports. Thoughts turned to terrorism, but according to initial witness reports on France Info, the blast, in the city was due to a “domestic” accident. The explosion was due to a gas leak in a block of flats. Five people were lightly injured in the blast, which was heard all through central Paris. Other buildings nearby were also damaged. It is not yet known if anyone was caught up in the blast.

Paris police later confirmed the incident occurred as the result of a gas leak, with a stone suspected to have cause the blast. According to first reports, five people are injured.

 

Around 140 firefighters were on the scene to help free victims from the building, which contained offices for businesses including lawyers, accountants and telecommunications firms.

Paris has witnessed its worst terror attack in November last year.
