Kolkata Knight Riders captain Gautam Gambhir on Monday, joined the list of sportspersons who opposed Bollywood star Salman Khan‘s appointment as the goodwill ambassador of the Indian Olympic contingent. During an event, the left-hander was asked about his opinion with regards to the latest controversy to have rocked Indian sports.
Gautam Gambhir said: “I would have been happy if someone like Abhinav Bindra would have been named as an ambassador. There are a lot of sportspersons who have done a lot for sport. Ideally, one among them should have been given that responsibility.”
“Sportspersons do not need publicity, they do the job for the country. This does not give real excitement to a sportsperson, I think a sportsperson should have been a much preferred choice. As he Abhinav Bindra is the first guy who has won a gold medal at the Olympics. He would have been the ideal choice. I have heard someone saying that sportsmen need publicity and sportspersons need Bollywood -my take is completely different.”
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on Saturday unveiled the Bollywood star as the goodwill ambassador of the Indian contingent. However, the move was questioned by several members of the Indian sports fraternity, with 2012 London Olympics bronze medalist Yogeshwar Dutt making his displeasure public with a series of tweets barely an hour after the decision was announced.
