Dipa Karmakar becomes first Indian to be named as ‘World Class Gymnast‘ by the Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) on 6 July. In a letter sent by the Secretary General Andre Gueisbuhler to the Gymnastics Federation of India, her award was mentioned, espn reported. Dipa had, only a few months ago, become the first Indian woman gymnast to qualify for the Rio Olympics 2016.
It is awarded to the top 30 qualifiers in multiple apparatus events or to event finalists at Worlds and is a once-in-a-career induction into gymnastics’ elite. “It’s common for gymnasts from Russia, US, Japan and China. But it’s a big thing for Indian gymnastics,” Dipa’s coach BS Nandy was quoted as saying in an Indian Express report.
Dipa Karmakar has already created history by winning bronze at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
