A one year old child in Delhi hospital is under a treatment after being diagnosed with the hormonal condition, which can cause sexual urges. It is said the boy has a the testosterone level of a 25-year-old. The boy was apparently taken to see a doctor in India by his worried family after they noticed he was growing faster than other children his age.

According to Hindustan Times the toddler’s parents noticed disturbing physical changes when the boy was just six months old and his genitalia had started growing abnormally. At 95cm tall when he was just 18 months old, boy was reportedly 10-15cm taller than other toddlers.

The childs mother said, “We thought maybe he was just a big baby, so we did not take him to the doctor. But by the time he was one, it was apparent there was something wrong. My mother-in-law, who has taken care of several children in the family, also said that his growth seemed unnatural. That is when we took him to the doctor.”

Tests revealed that his testosterone levels were 500-600 nanogram per deciliter (ng/dl). A one-year-old baby’s testosterone level is usually 20 ng/dl. Precocious puberty is a very rare condition, especially at such a young age. According to Dr Rustagi, only one in 100,000 have this condition, with the incidence increasing to one to two in 100,000 in boys aged eight to 10.

According to Dr. Vaishakhi Rustagi, “Precocious puberty is traumatic for a child of his age and it makes them violent – his muscle strength increased to a level that even his parents couldn’t control him. Another danger is that the child will stop growing prematurely, therefore remaining 3-4ft tall for life. The toddler has now been given medication to relieve his symptoms – at least until he is old enough to understand his condition.”

Further tests revealed that there was no underlying cause for the increased levels of hormones and the doctors put him on hormone therapy. He needs to take injections that help in blocking the effect of the hormones once a month. Later, the dose will be reduced to once in three months till he is 10-11 years old and is ready to accept the changes in his body.

Akash’s doctor, Vaishakhi Rustagi explained that ‘precocious puberty’ can be rather traumatic for a child his age.

Possible complications can include anything from violence due to increased strength, to stopping growth prematurely and possibly remaining 3-4 feet tall for life.

Baby boy is now been treated for the condition and will remain on medication until he is old enough to understand his condition. The treatment will costs his parents Rs 11,000 every month. However, not being a life-threatening one made the insurance companies reject the parents’ claims for covering the expenses.

What is precocious puberty?
Simply put the medical condition is an early onset of puberty which can cause further problems like tall stature, however, rapid bone maturation can also stop the linear growth too early and result in short adult stature. A report authored by Paul Kaplowitz on a health website Medscape states that the in girls it results in early appearance of breasts or menses while in boys it increases libido triggering the emotional distress for some children.

Precocious puberty at such a young age is rare but 1 out of 10,000 children are affected by early puberty by the time they turn 10.
