Nowadays, punishments in schools have crossed all the limits of good form even for the lower grades students. Teachers make students realize their mistakes by giving them extreme punishment and humiliate them like making them stand on benches. Teachers do not think that the children will be able to handle such humiliation in front of his classmates. This ends up by taking a serious step in an attempt to go out of the situation.
We have come across an incident of a 5th Class student who committed suicide by drinking poison. On 15th September a boy of Class 5 ended his life by consuming poison as his teacher punished him to stand on the bench for three hours continuously in the school.
Class 5 student commits suicide over ‘harsh punishment’ by teacher
According to the reports on Hindustan Times, the incident took place in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. The boy was 11-years-old and his name was Navneet Prakash. A teacher from Saint Antony’s Convent School made him stand on the bench for three hours. A Teacher didn’t allow Navneet to write his exams.
As per the reports on India Today, the father of Navneet, Ravi Prakash told that from the time Navneet returned from the school he looked upset. He also said that the teacher Bhavna used to tell the students to join her tuition classes.
After coming back from school, Navneet quietly went upstairs and after few hours came down to ask for food. After that, he took a glass of water with him in his room. After sometime when his parents did not hear any movement they went on to check him. They found him lying on the bed with foam coming out from his mouth.
Navneet was immediately taken to the Baba Raghav Das Medical College Hospital, where he was declared dead. Navneet wrote a chilling suicide note in which he told his parents not to believe his teacher.
This is what he wrote in the suicide note:
“AAJ 15-09-17 MERA PEHLA EXAM THA. MERI CLASS TEACHER NE MUJHE 9.15 TAK RULAYA, KHADA RAKHA ISLIYE KYUNKI WOH CHAAPLUSON KI BAAT MAANTI HAI. AAJ MAINE SOCH LIYA HAI KI MAIN MARNE WALA HOON. MERI AAKHRI IKSHA MERI MA’AM KO KISI BACHHE KO ITNI BADI SAZA NA DENE KO KAHEIN.”
The family and relatives of Navneet were shocked after reading the note and creates a ruckus outside the school. The parents of Navneet also filed a FIR against the School Manager and the Principal in Shahpur police station under section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the IPC, following which the police has arrested the teacher, Bhavna. Further investigations are also being conducted.
After seeing all such incidents the question arises in our mind is that are teachers becoming more insensitive to students or students are becoming more sensitive to punishments?
May God gives strength to Navneet’s family as they had lost their child. May his soul rest in Peace.
