BJP MP Udit Raj says Usain Bolt won 9 Olympic medals because he eats beef

Bharatiya Janata Party MP Udit Raj said that Usain Bolt won nine Olympic medals because his trainer advised him to eat beef. Udit Raj, who is also the National Chairman of the All India Confederation of SC/ST Organizations, later clarified that he was not advocating the consumption of beef, which is a sensitive issue in India.

Udit Raj told ANI, “I was worried that our performance (at Rio Games) was poor. I thought about the reasons. Then I noticed that Usain Bolt’s trainers told him to eat beef twice a day because he was poor, I just wanted to say that if there is dedication, then we can excel in sports. Giving excuses about lack of infrastructure and pointing out faults of the govt. and the system all the time should be done away with.” .

Udit Raj tweeted saying that he was only referring to how Usain Bolt won medals despite poor infrastructure and facilities.

After this became a controversy, Raj said in his interview to CNN News18: “My remark is in context of allegations that athletes don’t have enough facilities. In favour of Indians eating beef, BJP too has never said don’t eat anything.” The party has not yet responded on Raj’ stand.

Udit Raj, a prominent Dalit leader, was seen as a critic of the BJP before he joined the party just before the national election in 2014, saying he was convinced that the party sincerely believes in inclusive growth for all sections of Indian society.
