A woman has mortgaged her mangalsutra for building toilet in her house at Barahkhanna village in Bihar. Phool Kumari reached her in-laws’ house after marriage some years back, she got worried after finding no toilet at home. She requested her in-laws and her husband to construct a toilet at home but they expressed their inability to manage her wishes cause of their poor financial conditions.
Phool Kumari started working as a cook at a local school for finding money for constructing a toilet. But she decided to mortgage her mangalsutra when she couldn’t save enough money from her current income.
Here following which Rohtas district administration made her the brand ambassador of total sanitation programme recognising her effort.
Rohtas District Magistrate Animesh Kumar Parashar told TOI, “On Wednesday, I and other district administration officials would participate in the inauguration of construction work for a toilet at Kumari’s house in the presence of her husband and father-in-law. We have declared her our brand ambassador”.
“My toilet is under construction now. I am sure and confident that I will complete construction of my toilet before August 15 (Independence Day),” Phool kumari told Hindustan Times. She also said that it is a shame for a woman to defecate outside and a toilet is a must in every home.
