Music composer AR Rahman accepted the Indian Olympic Association’s offer to become the Goodwill Ambassador for the Rio Olympics 2016. There was a storm when the IOA named Salman Khan as a Goodwill Ambassador late last month. AR Rahman joining cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, Olympic gold medallist shooter Abhinav Bindra and Bollywood star Salman Khan. Sachin Tendulkar, Salman Khan and Abhinav Bindra had earlier accepted the role offered by the Indian Olympic Association.
AR Rahman said, “It’s absolutely an honour and my pleasure to be a goodwill ambassador of the Indian contingent scheduled for August 2016.”
Bollywood superstar Salman Khan was the first to be appointed Goodwill Ambassador. It generated a lot of controversy as several sportspersons, including Milkha Singh, felt it did nothing to improve the performance of athletes preparing for the Olympics. The IOA immediately went into damage-control mode and requested Sachin Tendulkar and Beijing Olympic gold medallist shooter Abhinav Bindra to be Goodwill Ambassadors.
