Mumbai Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Ashok Dudhe said primary reason for fire may be a short circuit, but the exact cause of the blaze would be ascertained after a proper inquiry.

According to a fire brigade official, a cylinder kept in the medical store is suspected to have exploded resulting in the fire.

The victims were rushed to the nearby Cooper Hospital, he said.

A fire official was quoted saying, “We received a call at 6.15 am and we rushed there with three fire tenders, one water tanker and two ambulances. The fire is under control now.”

An accident death report will be filed by the DN Nagar police station, officials said. Once the fire brigade finishes its probe, the investigation will look at negligence and other angles for the cause of the fire.
